What's for lunch?
What's for lunch?
We spend so much time thinking about what we're eating. But I often wonder if an equally important question is...
Where are we eating it?
Are you standing at the kitchen bench because you don't have time to sit down? Is your dining table covered in washing, paperwork or school bags? Are you eating lunch in the car between errands? At your desk while answering emails?Or perhaps you're skipping lunch altogether because you'll "grab something later."I've been there too. I urge you to stop and slow down and think about your eating. The act of eating is to nourish our bodies. When we are busy driving, working or standing at the kitchen bench thinking about what we have next on our long to do list our body is in fight flight flee. When we're rushing, our bodies naturally shift into a state where digestion becomes less of a priority. It is conserving energy to run from our predator that is chasing us. Back in the day this would have been a wild animal hunting us but these days it's more likely our inbox, our phone constantly alerting us that we have more and more things to do or just our minds working overtime.
I know we can't all light candles, gather around the table and savour every meal. Life isn't always like that. But perhaps we can pause for one deep breath. Notice the colours on our plate. Remember that this meal is an act of nourishment. Taste the first mouthful. If you do not have time to do this then at least make sure the food you are going to eat on the run is digestible. Smoothies are a good option, or slowly simmered soups.
Today, perhaps your lunch can be one small invitation to slow down.
